Access to full curriculum, RSE & RE

Welsh Government launches consultation – Access to full curriculum, RSE & RE

Kirsty Williams, the Minister for Education has launched an 8 week consultation seeking views on plans to ensure that all children have access to the full curriculum including Religious Education and Relationships and Sexuality Education.

Religious Education and Relationships and Sexuality Education (referred to as sex education in the legislation currently) are both statutory in the current curriculum, and will be statutory in the new curriculum, from September 2022.

The Minister has said in her statement that she is minded to ensure all children and young people are required to study RE and RSE in the new curriculum’ as opposed to the current practice where parents can prevent their children from attending RE and RSE lessons.  The consultation aims to find out what the practical implications of such a decision would be within schools and for parents and learners.

For RE we are also consulting on changing the name to Religions and Worldviews – to reflect the broader scope of this subject area in the new curriculum which will include non-religious views.

The consultation aims to gather a broad range of views before taking a final decision and will provide an opportunity for parents, teachers, young people and stakeholders to help shape this important area.

The consultation closes on 28 November 2019
